Delaware Teams/Players @ Philly Live I

This past weekend I had the opportunity to attend Philly Live, a NCAA certified showcase where college coaches could be in attendance. The event took place at St Josephs Preparatory School for Boys on W Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA. The event was three days(June 18th through the 20th) and was played on four courts. In this article I will focus on the Delaware high school teams and kids from Delaware that participated and excelled in this event. The following 9 Delaware schools had the chance to play against some other great teams/players in front of the college coaches and media:

Caravel Academy

Delcastle

Howard

Salesianum

Sanford

Seaford

St Elizabeth

St Georges

Woodbridge

CARAVEL ACADEMY: Caravel went 2 & 0 at the event defeating Octarara (PA) 79 to 26 and Upper Darby (PA) 63 to 46. 2023 6’4 G Jaden Rogers was the best player on the court both games scoring 23 points and 19 points respectively. He was able to attack the basket, pull up and hit the mid range, and knock down the three all weekend. He will be one of the top players in Delaware this upcoming year. Other players that played well for the Bucs were 2023 G/F John Clemmons/ 2024 G Dominique Wyatt/ & 2024 G Miles White.

DELCASTLE: Delcastle split their two games at St Joes Prep, defeating E & S 63 to 61 and falling to SLA Bebber 56 to 53. 2022 G Gabe Valmond shined all weekend carrying the offense load for the Cougars. Look for Valmond to be in the top of the scoring leaders during the season.

HOWARD: The Wildcats were powered this weekend by 2022 CG De’Mere Hollingsworth. He led the team in points and had 24 vs Great Valley. In addition to Hollingsworth the Wildcats had a great day and production from 2022 F Darius “DJ” Brown. The 6’4 Brown rebounded well both games and started attacking the basket well and scoring in the second game. Other key contributors were 2023 G/F Xavier Richards Powell and 2024 G Rahsaan “RJ” Matthews Jr

SALESIANUM: With some of the highest expectations coming into the upcoming season, Salesianum got a chance to play a tough schedule at Philly Live with games against West Catholic(PA), Math Civics and Science (PA), and The Fork (VA). Salesianum has recently added 2023 G James Johns Jr ( 4 star and coming in most recently at #86 on the Rivals 2023 list) to key returners of 2022 G/F Justin Molen, 2024 G Isaiah Hynson, and 2022 G Brett O’Hara. In addition they got an added transfer in 2023 G Deuce Mutts ( From Roman Catholic) who excels in tough defense and can score when needed. James showed flashes of his bright future scoring over 16 each of the three games. In addition showed he can hit the long range shot and play above the rim. Hynson played some of the best that I have seen him play running the point and pulling up and hitting the mid range consistently. O’Hara seems automatic from three and has a high basketball IQ. Molen bounced back on Sunday after an underachieving performance on Saturday by hitting the three, pulling up and knocking down jumpers, creating contact and getting to the free throw line, and being persistent in the passing lanes defensively, finishing with 16 points in the win over the Fork(VA). They will be returning to play in Philly Live II.

SANFORD: After graduating many pieces from last years state championship team including dominate big man Nnanna Njoku (Villanova) and knockdown shooter Brandon Dwyer (LaSalle) and loosing their head coach Stan Waterman (recently took the Del State job) I was curious to see how this annual Delaware powerhouse would respond. Even with loosing both games to Florida Christian and Methacton I was impressed with several players and how they played and competed. 2023 G Dayon Polk was impressive in both games doing everything they needed and can score in a variety of ways. He also involves everyone and is always around the ball. 2023 G Ollie Jones is a pesky on ball defender who can also attack the rim in a variety of ways and knock down the three consistently. One of the most underrated players in the state in 6’4 2022 F Ebuka Nwobodo. He was highly efficient in both games shooting a high percentage, rebounding, and blocking shots. His strong build with his high basketball IQ makes him someone all coaches should be watching.

SEAFORD: 2023 G Brent Ricketts Jr was one of the most impressive Delaware players all weekend. He was consistent in both games and can score in a variety of ways( Going to the basket, hitting the three, drawing contact in the lane and getting to the line). He is a quiet young man off the court who plays hard and with a passion on the court. He averaged 22 points in their time at Philly Live. 2024 PG Careen Boulden looked good this weekend also. He runs the offense, can find the open men, and attacks the basket when needed. 2024 F Aviyan Matthews played well in the second game knocking down the mid range and rebounding the ball.

ST ELIZABETH: 2023 G/F Jermai Herring was the standout for the Vikings leading them to both victories this weekend over Del CC and Council Rock North. Herring had 24 points vs CR and 21 vs Del County Christian. 2023 G Shaun Chandler also had a nice performance with 14 points /5 assists.

St Georges: Three standouts for St Georges were Tyson Shaw (6’3 2022), Aaron Rambert (6’2 2023), and 2024 PG Elin McCoy. Shaw was relentless in both games attacking the rim and scoring at will. Rambert shot the ball well and played smart. Vs Scranton Prep McCoy played with tremendous energy and great court vision.

WOODBRIDGE: 2022 G Keyon Scott scored the ball well and in a variety of ways in the first game vs Paul VI ending with 19. 2022 Emanuel McCrea Mosley played hard all day for the Raiders. Two “football guys” showcased their basketball skills as 2022 Noah Matthews rebounded well and takes up alot of space in the middle and 2023 G Kenny Newton attacked the rim and was relentless on defense in their second game.

List of Delaware kids who played and stood out in this showcase:

2024 G Robert Wright III of Neumann Goretti (PA)

2022 G Masud Stewart of Neumann Goretti (PA)

2024 G Jake West of Archbishop Carroll (PA)

2024 F Amir Williams of Neumann Goretti (PA)

2023 G Basil Laster of Archbishop Wood (PA)

2024 G Hunter Johnson of O’Hara

2023 G Jah Duval of Bonner(PA)

HOOPHALL CLASSIC 2019

In about a week, I will be traveling up to Springfield, Massachusetts to attend my fifth HoopHall Classic, a loaded high school basketball event put on by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  This year’s event will take place January 17th through January 21st and is played in Blake Arena at Springfield College.

The journey to this event each year started when two local fellow “basketball junkies” invited me to attend with them after us having discussions on events to be able to see the best high school players in the country.  After my first year in attendance I decided that I would make this trip annually to watch, in my opinion, the best high school basketball event in the country (best display of individual talent, matchups, top tiered teams, and all in the ultimate high school basketball environment).  This trip has evolved into much more including me planning vacation time around it and having my sports enthusiast significant other, Gina, attend the past few years with me.  This trip up north also allows us an opportunity to do some of the other things that we enjoy such as visiting historic sporting sites such as the Basketball Hall of Fame, Fenway Park, TD Garden, and Harvard Stadium.  January is right in the midst of the NFL playoffs and the state is usually electric around supporting their New England Patriots.  In addition, as foodies, it gives us the chance to dine at some great restaurants as well as stop at some places we have watched on the Food Network (Diners Drive Ins and Dives).

Over the previous few years the amount of talent that has been on display is unreal. Below is just a few of the players that I have had the opportunity to watch who have participated within the last 4 years that have went on to have great college careers, currently playing college basketball, or are playing basketball professionally:

  • Zion Williamson (Currently at Duke)
  • Marvin Bagley III ( Duke/ Sacramento Kings)
  • Malik Monk ( Kentucky/ Charlotte Hornets)
  • Jayson Tatum ( Duke/ Boston Celtics)
  • Brandon Ingram ( Duke/ Los Angeles Lakers)hoophall pic
  • DeAndre Ayton ( Arizona/ Phoenix Suns)
  • Cam Reddish (Currently at Duke)
  • Derrick Jones Jr ( UNLV/ Miami Heat)
  • Cheick Diallo ( Kansas/ New Orleans Pelicans)
  • RJ Barrett (Currently at Duke)
  • Mohamed Bamba ( Texas/ Orlando Magic)
  • Thon Maker (Milwaukee Bucks)
  • Michael Porter Jr ( Missouri/ Denver Nuggets)
  • Bol Bol (Currently at Oregon)
  • Ivan Rabb ( California/ Memphis Grizzlies)
  • Bam Adebayo ( Kentucky/ Miami Heat)
  • Jaylen Brown ( California/ Boston Celtics)
  • Wendell Carter Jr (Duke/ Chicago Bulls)
  • Keldon Johnson (Currently at Kentucky)

With the amount of talent playing each year there is no wonder why all the top college programs/coaches seem to make their way to Springfield for the event.  Roy Williams (UNC), John Calipari (Kentucky), and Shaka Smart (Texas) are just a few that seem to be on hand quite regularly to check out the action and to watch some of their top recruits. The venue is also no stranger to former NBA players being on hand. Some of the notables were Brandon Roy (coaching Nathan Hale a few years back) and Shaquille O’Neal (stopping by to watch is son Shareef play).

With the loaded schedule it seems that every game during the event is a must see featuring a top player or team.  Throughout the years there has been some tremendous individual performance during my time there.  I believe my most memorable performance was a game between Lone Peak (UT) and St Francis (GA) that matched up two high major guards in Frank Jackson (Duke/ New Orleans Pelicans) and Kobi Simmons (Arizona/ NBA/ G League) in which Jackson scored 49 points in that double overtime game. Kobi Simmons was impressive in his own right by having 34 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists in the victory.

This year’s event will be no different as the matchups and talent will be one to see. The first two days (Thursday the 17th and Friday the 18th) are local games and girls games that I won’t be attending.  Below I will list the matchups for the 3 days (January 19th, 20th, and 21st) that I will be in attendance for and note any notable players using the current ESPN player rankings.

Smyrna adds a basketball transfer

Smyrna(DE) basketball lost a key piece to their boys basketball team as Nalik- Veasley Johnson(2019 6’8 F) moved to North Carolina and will attend North Stanly for his senior season.  Nalik was a huge part of the team’s success helping them reach the state championship game last season. With Veasley Johnson moving  it left a void on the defensive end, especially in the rebounding area.  That piece may now be replaced with incoming transfer, 2020 6″6 F Matthew Obiagu.  Obiagu played last year at The Caramel School in Ruther Glen(VA).  Matthew just started playing the game of basketball a few years ago, but is already excelling on the defensive end(becoming a great defender and rebounder).  This does not come to any surprise as Matthew is the younger brother of 7″ C Ike Obiagu(shot blocking specialist) of Seton Hall.  Ike recently transferred to Seton Hall after playing his freshman season at Florida State.  “Matthew is a very competitive, hard-working young man, who is a great defender and rebounder, as well a great student”, says Toby Campbell(Head Coach of The Caramel School).  Adding him to the returnees at Smyrna, players such as Jaymeir Garnett/Nahshon Sylvester they should be in contention to fight with Dover, Sussex Tech, and Caesar Rodney for the Henlopen North.

2018 McDonald’s All American Games

McD logo

Next week I will have the opportunity to attend my second consecutive McDonald’s All American Games. This year’s event will be played on March 28th at Philips Arena (home of the Atlanta Hawks) in Atlanta, Georgia.  The McDonald’s All American Games are the biggest high school basketball all star games in the world and benefit the Ronald rmcdh atlMcDonald House Charities.  This year’s event will benefit the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities which has more than 50,000 families since 1979. Proceeds will support the operations of the two Ronald McDonald Houses in Atlanta, the Ronald McDonald Family Room, and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.

I have watched the McDonalds games on TV for several years and last year (2017) was my first opportunity to watch the games in person.  The games took place at the United Center in Chicago, IL, home of the Chicago Bulls. This was a rather special time to see it in person as I got to root on/interact with  Delaware’s own Trevon Duval (Duke) mcd picand other players from the region such as Mohamed Bamba (Westtown, PA/ Texas University), Quade Green (Neumann Goretti, PA/ University of Kentucky), and Nick Richards (Patrick School, NJ/ University of Kentucky). In addition I got to see some of the most notable players in the country such as; DeAndre Ayton, Michael Porter Jr, Trae Young, Collin Sexton, Troy Brown, and Wendall Carter.  The experience was one of a lifetime which included having access to players in the locker room, front row for the post game interviews/awards, hanging out with the players in the tunnel prior to entering the court, and a tour of the United Center which has tons of history and was where the greatest NBA player of all time in my opinion played, Michael Jordan.

This years event will once again have the best players in the country including the 2018 Naismith Trophy Boys High School Player of the Year, R.J Barrett of Montverde Academy(FL). Barrett is committed to Duke University and joining him in this years game will be three other Blue Devil commits in Zion Williamson (Spartanburg Day, SC), Tre Jones (Apple Valley, MN), and Cam Reddish (Westtown, PA).  Other big time notable players include Oregon commits Bol Bol (Findlay Prep) / Louis King (Hudson Catholic), Kansas commits David McCormack ( Oak Hill), Devon Dotson (Providence Day), and Quentin Grimes (Woodlands College Park).  Regional talents Jahvon Quinerly (Villanova) and Naz Reid (LSU) will also be young men I’m interested in seeing participate.  At this time there are still three players that are undecided on which college they will attend  (Romeo Langford, EJ Montgomery, and Jordan Brown.)  Full roster is pictured below.

roster18jpeg

Each year I continue to add new events to the list of the ones I already attend such as Slam Dunk to the Beach, The Hoop Hall Classic, and most recently the McDonalds All American Games. In 2018 I will attempt to add the City of Palms or the Chic Fil A Classic in an effort to see the best high school basketball in the country and support as many of these young men as possible that use basketball as a tool to better their personal lives, use it to gain an education or an advantage in life.

Smyrna loses the states most explosive football player to transfer

After Smyrna won the Delaware state football championship in the 2015/16 season there was a lot of questions of how or if they could duplicate that success the following year. During the summer while Smyrna was working hard trying to get ready to defend their D1 state championship about 30 miles away, Eastern Christian Academy( Elkton, MD) was in the middle of closing it doors.  Eastern Christian Academy was a school established in 2012 by David Sills IV and was a primary football focused program.  In 2014 according to MaxPreps, the Honey Badgers played the toughest schedule in the country.  In such a short term the school had some notable players such as Wendell Smallwood(Philadelphia Eagles), David Sills, Freddy Canteen, and many others.  After closing the doors there were many talented student athletes who needed to find landing spots to further their education.  One of those players was 2017 standout RB Leddie Brown.

The news traveled fast through the first state that Brown would enroll and attend Smyrna for the 2016/17 school year.  This was big news due to the talent Brown possessed and usually it is kids making headlines by transferring out of state to pursue other opportunities rather than them coming to Delaware.  Smyrna was already returning offensive standouts 2017 QB Nolan Henderson(University of Delaware commit) and 2018 RB Will Knight(2015 rushing yards and 38 touchdowns in sophomore season) and now with the addition of Brown, it turned into a nightmare for all defensive coordinators that were planning to try to slow them down offensively in the upcoming season.

The 2016/17 season started out as expected for the Eagles and their newest addition who began 3 & 0 (defeating Delcastle, Salesianum, and Appoquinimink), outscoring their opponents 184 to 55 while Brown added 10 TDs in those games.  The remainder  of the season was along the same lines as Smyrna outscored everyone finishing the season 10 & 0 heading into the state tournament.  The tournament was no different as they won the two games they played by an average of 35ppg and eventually being crowned the 2016/2017 Delaware D1 state football champions for the second consecutive year.

Coming into the 2016/17 season Brown was a 3 star recruit by Rivals who boasted offers from schools such as Louisville, Maryland, and West Virginia.  Before making a college commitment on April 30th, 2017 to West Virginia he held offers from numerous schools such as UConn, Florida, MD, NC, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, and many others.  A few days after his commitment a few more big time schools offered including  Alabama, Ohio State, and UCLA. After these offers and impressive showings at camps, Rivals increased Brown to a 4 star.

After finishing out the football season by winning a state championship and making a verbal college commitment in April, Leddie and his family looked ahead for the future to see what situation would be best for him, his family, and to continue improving. Today Leddie announced that he will transfer from Smyrna to Neumann Goretti (PA) for his senior season.

Player of the Year transfers

2019 5’7 standout guard Alisha Lewis told  me this week that she has decided to leave Ursuline Academy and will transfer to Long Island Lutheran in New York.

Lewis helped lead the Ursuline Raiders to a 23-1 overall record including their third consecutive Delaware state girls basketball championship this past season. This was the programs 17th overall state championship, whos notable alumni include WNBA superstar Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics. This success along with her talent got Alisha post season recognition including 1st Team All State and Delaware State Player of the Year selected by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association.

Lewis was a three year starter at Ursuline Academy and this past season averaged 10.6 points per game and 2.1 steals per game. She has been busy and working hard this summer playing AAU with the EYBL Nike sponsored Philly Belles and also had the opportunity in May to attend USA U16 National Team Trials.

I got the opportunity to speak to John Noonan(Ursuline Academy Head Coach/Owner of OHP Basketball) earlier about the news of Lewis transferring and here is what he had to say. “Alisha is a tremendous young lady and super basketball talent, she will be missed on and off of the court.  After careful consideration Alisha and her mother believe a transfer is in her best interest to thrive academically, socially, and athletically. They are seeking a change of scenery for her high school experience as basketball is only a small part of the equation. We wish her all of the best and she will be remembered as an all time great Ursuline Raider”. Noonan’s resume includes being a 4 time state champion head coach(2012, 2015, 2016, 2017), USA Coach of the Year in 2015, Delaware Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2017, and was amongst 12 finalist for the United States Marine Corps/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association national high school coach of the year.

Lewis will be joining a very talented group of players at Long Island Lutheran that include (2018) Grace Stone, Amani Free, and (2019) Jaida Patrick. They will look to compete for a New York NYSAIS AA state championship next season.

It was an absolute pleasure getting to cover and interact with Alisha during her time playing here in Delaware. She is a very talented player and great young lady. We here at 1stStateSports wish Alisha and her family the best moving forward with her high school career and look forward to her long term success beyond.
